Incentive stability (ESS)
DPO2U frames tokenomics and attestation economics through evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) rather than stopping at static equilibrium.
Why ESS instead of only Nash equilibrium
A Nash equilibrium can describe a state where no player wants to deviate unilaterally. But DPO2U needs a stronger condition:
if a small population of dishonest or low-effort validators appears, does honest attestation remain stable?
That is an ESS-style question in the Maynard Smith sense.
Strategy set
For a simplified validator population, define strategies such as:
H— honest validation with full cost paidL— lazy validation with reduced effort and increased false-positive riskF— fraudulent attestation for immediate gainC— collusive validation among mutually reinforcing actors
The protocol objective is to shape rewards, penalties, and challenge costs so that H resists invasion by L, F, and C.
Required conditions
A plausible ESS-oriented design needs at least:
- positive honest margin — honest validation must be economically sustainable
- cheap challenge path — suspicious outputs must be contestable
- penalty asymmetry — failed or fraudulent attestation should be more expensive than careful validation
- reputation persistence — repeated interaction must matter
- bounded cost of verification — challenge and replay cannot be prohibitively expensive
Why this is relevant to DPO2U
The protocol is built around repeated interaction:
- agents perform multiple tasks over time
- counterparties can re-check old attestations
- machine-readable identity makes past behavior legible
That creates the shadow of the future Axelrod describes, but ESS asks whether the economic layer actually stabilizes the cooperative strategy.
Status of the result
This is a research framing, not a completed theorem.
The current docs can responsibly claim that:
- DPO2U explicitly targets incentive stability
- the token model is being interpreted through ESS
- the exact parameter ranges for stable honest behavior remain open
That is a stronger and more honest posture than declaring the mechanism already proven.
